Turning trash into toys

02 May

If this isn’t my mantra, I don’t know what is!

Again, I’m taking a break from posting the next step in my airship construction to present a great video that really embodies what I love about art!

If you follow the link below, you will be directed to the TED website to see the video I’m speaking of. A man from India, Arvind Gupta, trained as an engineer, discovered simple toys made mainly from junk or cheap materials being made and sold at street markets. Inspired by the teaching possibilities, he began collecting the toys and showing kids how to construct them and as a byproduct of the construction, teaching them scientific priciples.

This fits so well into my philosophy of how art and science/health/ecology fit together. Taking something cheap, free or trash-bound and turning it into something useful and beautiful again. What a treat this video is!

Kinetic sculptures!

06 Dec

This is perhaps the coolest thing I’ve seen in a long while. Dutch artist, Theo Jansen creates metal tube sculptures that move using wind power…and sometimes even stored as air pressure in recycled pop bottles! This has a double impact on me personally because not only is he doing something green and problem-solving and using some recycled materials, but he presented his art at the TED conference in Monterey, California. TED is something that I also have a huge appreciation for because new and exciting ideas are presented at these conferences. Below is the video of Theo’s presentation at the Monterey TED conference.

I hope you enjoy this remarkable piece as much as I did!!
